This is an edit of six days mountain biking in Colorado and Utah. Fruita, Grand Junction, Moab, Keystone… It was an epic trip. Two Contour HD cameras running almost nonstop amassed almost 100gb of 720p 60fps video. Over 13 hours of video was edited down to 35 minutes over the course of 9 months. Cannondale Tim commissioned the whole trip and only asked that the video include some badass Soundgarden track. Make no mistake, this is bike porn. Sit back and enjoy.

Fixed tabs and a new 512px icon for Snow Leopard

So I was catching some flak from peeps for the jacked up tabs and icon that wasn’t huge so I set out to update Green Moleskine to include these qualities. First I fixed and slightly upgraded the tabbing in the interface, and then I got in touch with a guy I met on Forrst, the amazing Mr. Mike Stezycki who posted a sweet moleskine with fitting green sleeve. He agreed to let me use his icon for the project so I slightly modified the original design with the customary pen and gear, and together with the tabs, zipped it all up again and put it online for you guys. This update should be a bit refreshing; sorry I was late to upload this but hopefully there are a few out there still updating your apps to make use of this.

Head on over to the project page for the download.

Update: MissingDrawer Plugin updated to Version 2010-11-28

I’ve had to rough it lately with my early adoption of Snow Leopard but things are getting better. Safari users running Snow Leopard should rejoice that MacHangout has put a beta of Glims up that doesn’t fail at life and fixes a number of bugs that previous betas had. Dropbox has a new version out that is fully Snow Leopard compatible but if you’re interested in the new LAN sync features and don’t mind risky software, check out version this thread. It fixes your versioning icons in the finder among other things.

Sadly, Agile Web Solutions has decided to make someone upgrade to 1Password 3 for Snow Leopard support. Growl isn’t compatible either. Wait until 1.2 comes out to update your Growl install.

For more questions on compatibility you can check this site for a MASSIVE list of software that isn’t always the most updated but should give you a head start on where an app is on compatibility.

Tethering has been my lifeline to the outside world while at the fire station for 24 hours at a time. There are spotty wireless networks here and there but you have to be sitting outside to get decent signal. I had signed up for an ATT data card but when I started tethering my iPhone, I decided to pay the early termination fee and cancel the service. ATT eventually talked me into making it a family plan line for $9/month and credited me $50 all so I wouldn’t cancel the contract. Whatever, it saved me $60/month for 11 months.

So I’m tethering like a madman and this iPhone version 3.1 business comes out and there’s no way I’m going to upgrade and lose tethering just for some genius functions. I’m listening to suggestions but for the time being I’m just going to wait for help.benm.at to come up with a patch. I don’t want to go crazy. Good luck Ben.

I like my new laptop, don’t get me wrong, but I despise having to have an adapter to plug into different monitors. Digital projector? Where is that VGA adapter… Cinema display at work? Where is that DVI adapter… Why the hell do I have to have an adapter for both in the first place? I should be able to plug into SOMETHING without an adapter. Not to mention each adapter is $30.

What’s that? The new LED Cinema displays hook up to my laptop with no adapter, power the laptop and provide a USB hub? That’s great but that is one display. Name one more…

That’s what I thought.

friggin update: Older Apple Cinema display has crappy obscure DVI plug with rounded corners. Even with an adapter for DVI, my laptop can’t plug into this display without an additional adapter. One day, I won’t need these computers. I’ll just think internet and it’ll happen.

So Adobe just announced that it isn’t going to support CS3 on Snow Leopard so if you upgrade, be warned that if problems exist that they will NOT be fixed. This is on top of the fact that a requirement for Snow Leopard is an Intel processor. So let’s recap: To run Snow Leopard reliably you must have CS4 running on an Intel Mac. This is making the $30 upgrade a bit more costly for a lot of folks…

Say you get CS4, which isn’t currently supported under PowerPC architecture either, to be compatible, and you grab an Intel Mac. You just paid a minimum of around two grand AND the mac comes with Snow Leopard. This just may be the most expensive $30 you never spent.

Cabin Fever or How I dealt with the Purple Plague

I write almost everything in TextMate. I have written so much code in this great editor that I constantly reach for shortcuts and snippets outside of it, normally resulting in some benign default function of the current app which almost always produces a FAIL. It’s because of this that I’ve taken to writing emails, tweets, wiki entries, blog posts and most everything else I can in TextMate by gathering plug-ins and bundles that extend it’s functionality. It’s no surprise then that the more capability I added to the app, the less time I spent in the respective apps that were being replaced. This extra time eventually led to me developing a pretty monochromatic outlook on my workspace. I was getting cabin fever, er, TextMate fever… from the minimalist program. Although the interface for the app is very straightforward, many aspects ( purple? ykm ) didn’t fit with the rest of the Mac interface. So I set out to see what my options were.

Being a graphic designer, I have always been indifferent about the icon. I would invoke QuickSilver, pull up TextMate and see same purple gear on a bordered window with a pen and I’d rather eat pencil shavings. I’m sure there are lots of people who depend on that icon being there for them when they get to work each day, and even more importantly need it to stay purple. I’ve got nothing against gears or purple or bordered windows in general, but the icon was impersonal and dry. I had to have something new to look at.

Renovation can be scary…

Research for inspiration yielded what I call ‘Gunk‘. I wanted an icon that made me want to type without making me feel like a sun-deprived cave dweller. I frequently map out site concepts and ideas, and sometimes actually write, in a moleskine, and decided it would have to do. So I made up the logo ( “opened a window” in purple fever terms ) and started looking into what had already been done for TextMate and found a wealth of plugins, which I reduced to Webmate, SVNMate, and MissingDrawer. I looked into ProjectPlus which could have replaced parts of MissingDrawer and SVNMate but it proved bulky and loved to pick fights with any other plugin I added, which started to defeat the purpose of how I use TextMate as I would have to disable blogging and other plugins to use it.

So I used WebMate for the convenience factor it added to basic html editing, SVNMate for the SVN status icons it added to the project view, and MissingDrawer to kill the rounded corner drawer that I loathe. Note: if you regularly put the project drawer on different sides of the main window (Dave), this plugin isn’t for you. I then grabbed several goodies from a nice makeover kit from Alexander Atallah called SuperMate, modified the square tabs a smidge, added the code collapse from SubtleGradient and I was starting to feel a spring breeze. I then took the documentation from SuperMate, gave it an overhaul to have decent markup and updated it to include all the additions and zipped the whole deal for you to download. I’m sure that TextMate 2 is in the works, but I’m hoping that this will tide me over. If you like it, leave me a comment.

update: now includes an ico for windows users of E-TextEditor thanks to Chase Swindler
please: leave comments people. I’m seeing a response for a document icon set and I don’t want to waste time making it if no one wants it
